Yes for a time back in the 70s into early 80s iirc, hydrogen transmission via pipe lines was the more common mode put forward and industry would use that gas by whatever means. Times have changed, new catalysts and methods means that production costs have come down for creating liquid fuels with more energy density.

The next 40 years will probably see a mix of rechargeable vehicles with those in more remote or wanting to be free of the grid, garage based ammonia based fuel cells. Things could change if the battery market pulls a huge price hike though.
